Today while Larkin was in school I took Willa to the Wildflower Center for a picnic lunch, and we met our friends Emily and Daphne. It was in the 70's without a cloud in the sky, but it was a bit chilly with the wind!! Willa was very excited to pack up her backpack with a lunch and then ran around yelling, "I'm yate (late)! I'm yate! Important date!"
When we picked up Larkin after our trip, Willa told her, "I go on picnic with Daphne!" Uh oh! Busted! Larkin then had a pretty impressive meltdown. She does not like to hear about anything fun going on while she is in school!

Big week for Willa
This week I bought the girls some sunglasses, and Willa will not take hers off! She's been wanting to go potty this week like a big girl, and while I was off cleaning her potty, she was hopping on her bike for a quick naked ride!
Yesterday while I was cleaning the kitchen I heard music, giggling, and then some lips smacking. I came in the playroom to find them dancing to a musical toy, and then when the music would stop, they would hug and give each other a kiss. This continued for about 20 minutes!
And biggest news yet, Willa slept in a "big girl bed" last night! I took her mattress out of her crib in the afternoon just to see how she would react, and she loved it. She immediately told me, "I sleepy. Get out. I sleep big girl bed!" At night I asked her if she wanted her crib or her bed, and she jumped in the bed. She fell right asleep and didn't make a peep all night. Today if her nap goes okay in the bed then we're taking down the crib tonight!
Here's a pic we snapped first thing this morning as she was waking up. Guess she's technically not a big girl until we can get her to drop this pacifier!! :)

kite festival
Here's some pics from the kite festival this year. It was in the 70's and very few clouds in the sky. We all had a great time flying Larkin's princess kite. Willa's kite wouldn't fly more than a few feet off the ground before it would nosedive, but she didn't mind!
Hanging on tight to Daddy, just in case she gets blown away!
Chillin' in Mommy's sunglasses
We met Liam and Rowan there, and the kids had a fun picnic lunch together. Amazingly Rowan and Willa had the exact same kite, and neither would fly!

Matt and Laura's wedding
At the rehearsal dinner, Laura's aunts gave the girls some goodie bags to keep them busy during the dinner. They loved it! Here they are modeling their loot and getting ready to head to the pool!
Warming up in Catmama's lap
Just before the wedding giving Uncle Matt a hug
It's showtime! All decked out and ready to toss some petals!
At the rehearsal, Larkin refused to walk down the aisle and cried on my shoulder. On the wedding day though, she pulled it together and loved every minute of it! At first Willa walked behind Larkin and picked up all of her fallen petals. Willa continued to toss petals all during the ceremony, while Larkin watched excitedly saying, "Uncle Matt's gonna kiss Auntie Laura! It's coming!!"
My dad officiated the wedding.
At the reception, we had to drag the girls off the dance floor-they loved dancing to the music and twirling in their dresses!
Larkin was having Cinderella flashbacks during the first dance. She said it was just like the ball in our Cinderella book, and she wanted to dance with the prince! Laura and Matt danced first, and Larkin went and got her own chair right next to the dance floor, and then watched intently during the whole dance. Then when the song ended, she yelled, "MY TURN!" and ran to Matt, who was just about to dance with my mom. The three of them danced for a little bit, and then I pulled her away (while she was crying and saying, "I just want to dance with the prince, Mommy!!") The rest of the night she had eagle eyes on Matt and was constantly trying to find him and have him hold her, dance with her, or just give her a hug.
We ended up changing their dresses midway into the dinner so that we can use the dresses again for Uncle Ryan's wedding in August!
Luckily Larkin did not catch the bouquet!! She knew all about it though. "Mommy, who ever catches it gets married next. I'm going to marry Willa. No, I think I'm gonna marry myself."
My camera was locked in a different room for most of the wedding, so I missed out on many family pictures that I had been hoping to take (the only picture of Joel I have is of his pants in the background!!). Some of these pics I copied off facebook from Laura's Aunt Kathy--thanks Kathy!!
We had a great time meeting all of Laura's family and touring around California. It was such a beautiful wedding and we're glad we were able to be a part of it!

Mariposa Grove
The one place in Yosemite we really wanted to see was Mariposa Grove, which is a grove of sequoia trees at the southernmost end of the park. We packed the girls into the backpacks (screaming, of course--they were in no mood for a hike!) and started out on our SEVEN plus mile round trip hike!
In the summer you can drive down this two mile long road to reach the grove, but not in the winter! Lots of people had snowshoes, but we just walked in the footpath that others had made and did just fine.
Are we there yet??? It was sloooow going with all the deep snow. We had walked for almost 2 hours and saw a couple returning from the grove. We asked them how much further we had to go and they said, "You don't want to know!!!" Not a good sign. Then we got the news that once you reach the entrance to the grove, you could keep walking for another 6 miles if you want to see it all!
The girls were spotting all kinds of tracks in the snow (99% were human tracks), and we kept them entertained by guessing what kind of animal made each track. We "saw" bear, squirrel, fox, skunk, bird, mouse, and deer tracks, and had fun guessing what each animal was doing or running from when he made the tracks.
FINALLY! We made it! Check out the no parking sign!
The "Fallen Giant" was one of the largest trees in the park until it fell in the late 1800's.
In the summer you can take an open air tram through the grove. I don't regret one minute of our hike through the snow, but next time we'll be taking the tram!!!

Yosemite, part one
Ok, grab a cup of coffee because this is a long one!! We packed up our rental car to the brim (really should have upgraded to a bigger vehicle!) and took a 4 hr drive to Yosemite National Park. The ride went by really quickly and the girls did great in the car. Larkin did cry a little because she wanted to go back to her "old hotel" and did not want a new one.
Once we arrived we checked into our hotel, which was a lodge inside of the park-so it was very convenient. There was very little snow anywhere, but we could see a little up in the mountains. Right behind our hotel was Yosemite Falls--so we headed there first. The girls loved climbing on fallen logs and throwing sticks into the water.
Yosemite Falls
The next day we hiked out to Mirror Lake, where you can see Half Dome's reflection in the water. Very beautiful hike!!
Joel and Larkin hiking above Mirror Lake.
That evening we rode the shuttle bus to Curry Village, which is an area inside the park that has an outdoor skating rink and also a fire pit. We were hoping to have Joel teach Larkin how to ice skate. On our ride over there, the sky just opened up and it started DUMPING snow. The girls had the best time--it was coming down so hard that you could hardly see. They immediately started making a snowman in the middle of a blizzard! It was snowing too hard to teach Larkin how to skate, but she forgot all about skating and just had fun in the snow!
It was a good thing that we took the shuttle bus to the skating rink because the snow was so heavy that chains were REQUIRED (by law, or you get a $500 ticket) on your car in order to drive in the valley! We did end up putting them on our car later on our trip, but it was nice to not have to learn how to install chains in the dark during a snowstorm!
It snowed all during the night and when we woke up, we were in a winter wonderland!
This was the view right outside our hotel. Yosemite Falls is right between those two large trees behind Joel. It's hard to see here, but the mist from the falls was frozen! All the mist piled up on the rocks and it looked like a huge pile of powdered sugar.
The girls could not walk more than three feet before spontaneously falling down for another snow angel.
Willa had a hard time walking in the deep snow with her little legs!! All of the snow you see here was all new--these pics are from the valley floor where there was no snow the day before.
Can never eat enough snow!
After breakfast we hiked back toward Yosemite Falls again.
We built a snowman right at the base of the falls.
El Capitan
The biggest snowball yet!
Willa standing on top of the snow fort Joel helped them build.
After the snowfall, we drove up into the mountains. This picture below is at a place they call "Tunnel View." There's a huge tunnel through a mountain that you drive through, and when you come out on the other side you see this view of the valley. This picture really doesn't do it justice, but it was beautiful after a snowstorm! There were lots of professional photographers there that were excited to take pics after the snowfall.
From there we continued through the mountains to go find some giant sequoias. More on that in the next post!
